Mountaineer’s House

This is the new office of the Yatsugatake forestry company Tennyosan. The building's master builder is the only female carpenter of Sobokuya, San-chan. The result is a powerful and delicate wooden structure. The building is constructed using the “Nuki” construction method, which does not use diagonal braces, and has thick red pine drum beams and a W-beam. The building is a large, open space with no pillars. If a sumo ring were built in the centre, it could also be used as a sumo wrestling ring. It is very thick-boned and strong. Tennyosan and Sobokuya work together to explore the future of locally produced timber in the Yatsugatake region.
